How To Ensure You’re Prepared for Termite Season

When it comes to household pests, termites are some of the most destructive invaders you can have. While cockroaches and ants can be annoying, termites can actually cause real damage and costly repairs.

When Is Termite Season?

Termites tend to swarm between mid-March through mid-June. These swarms can reach up to 1,000 insects, meaning that they are relatively easy to spot. If you’re unsure whether you’re looking at ants or termites, ant swarms are much smaller, often maxing out at around 50 insects. 

Termites like to swarm when the weather is nice (around 60 to 70 degrees), and they typically cluster after a rainy day. Fortunately, it’s easy to prevent termite swarms from settling into your house as long as you follow these four simple steps. 

Step 1: Remove Dead or Rotting Wood

Although termites eat wood, what they’re really after is cellulose, which is present in moist and decaying wood. If you have any tree stumps or logs near your house, they will look like a golden buffet for termites. 

Wet wood is much more appealing than the dry variety, so if your firewood is stored correctly and out of the rain, it should be okay. However, be sure to inspect it for termite swarmers (flying bugs), just in case. 

Step 2: Remove Brush and Dead Plants

Clearing the area around your home is an excellent way to deter all pests, not just termites. Even something as small as a pile of twigs or branches can attract these insects, so remove any and all natural debris before spring hits.

As termites burrow into wood, they leave plenty of evidence. Pay attention to entry points near your home’s foundation. You should also look at any floorboards or corner areas for blistering and wood damage.
